The Thanksgiving Card Deadline: Working Backwards From November 26

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. Most people who miss it do not miss it by much, and they do not miss it because they forgot. They miss it because they worked backwards from the wrong date.

Here is the mistake, and it is almost universal: you count back from Thanksgiving to the day the cards need to be in your hands. That is the wrong end of the job. The cards sitting in a box on your desk have accomplished nothing. The date that matters is the day they land in somebody else's mail.

The three dates, backwards

Start at the far end and walk back.

Your client should have it by Tuesday, November 24. Not Wednesday. Offices empty out on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and a card that arrives to a desk nobody sits at until December has become a Christmas card with the wrong picture on it.

So it goes in the mail by Wednesday, November 18. The USPS service standard for First-Class Mail is one to five days — that range survived both phases of the 2025 service-standard refinements, which took effect April 1 and July 1 of that year, and USPS's own fact sheet says almost 70% of First-Class Mail now carries a standard of three days or less. But a standard describes a normal week, and this is not one. In the holiday season your card is competing with everything else in the mail to get moved, so take the three days and add a day or two. Mailed Wednesday the 18th, it still lands by Tuesday the 24th.

So the cards are in your hands by Monday, November 16. That gives you two days to sign and address them, which is not generous. Signing 250 cards properly is an evening and part of another. If somebody else is addressing them for you, it is still two days.

Work that back through production and ordering, and the comfortable date to place a Thanksgiving order is the first week of November. Order then and nothing in the chain is carrying risk.

The last door out, and what it costs

There is a later date. I want to be honest about what it buys and what it doesn't.

Order by Monday, November 16 with a rush and expedited shipping, and we can have cards on your desk by Friday, November 20. That is the real floor. Past it, Thanksgiving is not happening.

Now look at what you have bought. Cards arrive Friday the 20th. You sign over the weekend. They go in the mail Monday the 23rd. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is day two, and the office is already emptying. At the three-day standard they land Friday the 27th, after the holiday, and that is before you add the day or two the holiday mail costs you.

So the last door out is not a coin flip. It is a long shot, in the single worst week of the year to be taking one. Thanksgiving week is not a normal mail week.

It also costs money in two places: a $50 rush fee to move your job forward in the schedule, and expedited shipping on top, which is billed at cost and is not cheap for a box of cards. You are paying twice for a long shot.

I will still take that order. Plenty of good relationships have been maintained by a card that arrived the Monday after. But you should know which thing you are buying.

What you are not waiting on

One thing that is not in this calendar, because people assume it is: the proof.

Every order comes with a free virtual proof. You see it when you order online and again with your order confirmation, and production continues on schedule. If you want the job to wait for your yes, that is a $20 hold, and nothing goes to press until you approve it. If you want the printed card in your hand first, that is a $45 physical sample, and for a first-time logo setup it is often money well spent. Three options. The default one has no courier in it and does not wait on you, so the proof is not the thing that will make you late.

The thing that makes people late is deciding. Choosing the design, settling the wording, and getting the list clean. That is where the two weeks go.

The discounts happen to agree with the presses

This was not designed, but it is worth pointing out, because it means the cheap decision and the safe decision are the same decision.

The 25% early-order tier ends October 15. That is squarely inside the comfortable window — order then and you are early on both counts.

The 20% tier ends November 16, which is the same day your cards need to be in your hands, and the last day a rush order is even worth attempting. Price and production are telling you the same thing on the same day.

After that the ladder is pointed at Christmas, not Thanksgiving, and so is everything else.

If you want one date to remember

Order by the first week of November. Mail by Wednesday, November 18. Everything else on this page is either the comfortable version of that or the expensive version of it.

And if you are reading this in October, you are not early. You are exactly on time, and you will pay less than everyone who reads it in three weeks.
